Researchers from the University of Utah of the United States found that women living in the most populated area of Utah state increased the risk of abortion (16 percent) when they came in contact with air pollution levels.
This study, conducted from 2007 to 2015, comprised 1300 women who approached the emergency department for medical help after abortion (up to 20 weeks of pregnancy).
The team of researchers examined the risk of miscarriage during the period of three to seven days after three normal pollutants in the air - increased amount of particulate matter (PM 2.5), nitrogen oxide and ozone.
The team found that women approaching expansion of nitrogen oxide increased the risk of miscarriage up to 16 percent.
This study is published in Fertility and Sterility Magazine.
