The church's progressive death has been effectively described by asset management, risk reduction, reliability improvement and quality control practitioners' "time-versus-time curve". This curve describes the health or condition of the church at any time. At the beginning of the fall, one or more of the church's components, resources, or activities begin to malfunction. At the moment it is hardly noticeable and the enterprise as a whole is essentially restraining its activities. For example, a pastor is retired, for example, leaving leadership space. The curve finally reaches point "F". "Functional failure" does occur in the end but there are usually many red flag events like this:

• The church experiences a "split" with 20 to 40% of the congregation being hurt. Members who are the root cause of the fall never leave. As others go, their strength grows.
• Practically all parents under the age of 45 leave with their children and other family members.
• The church has nothing to offer young Christian families and nothing to offer "seekers" of any age.
• Holiday members are misled and confused or perhaps just viewed as "bible thumping" worries.
• In the body of the Church, the meaning of the "Saints" assumes an increasingly visible role.
• Staff business is booming. The congregation seeks a "restorative pastor" who will feed and entertain them well and will not burden them with words of confession, repentance and obedience.
• Articles of faith become vague and unimportant.
• The church mission statement is window dressing.
• Serious financial issues are quickly entering the church.
• Members view themselves as long suffering, faithful survivors, Jesus presumably will reward them for their faithfulness and ignore their lack of fruit.

Once a church reaches the "F" point computer technology subjects, failure may be inevitable although real death may not occur for many years depending on the financial situation.
