The dominant individual performance by Georgetown-bound senior Chloe Gonzalez helped lead North Hunterdon to its third straight team title at the 48th annual NJSIAA/M-F Athletic Girls Cross Country Championships at Holmdel Park Saturday.
Gonzalez was last year’s individual runner-up to then Randolph senior Abbey Loveys.
This year was a different story as Gonzalez posted a 17:56, 23 seconds better than Montgomery sophomore Caroline Mehlhorn to capture the school’s first individual title since Jodie Bilotta won three straight (1985-87).
The Lions, who also tied with Red Bank Catholic for the most-ever M of C team titles with nine, averaged a 19:02 per runner including sophomore Magdalyn Hoffman (18:57, 7th), sophomore Addison Schmidt (19:04, 17th), junior Alexandra Carlson (19:35, 38th) and sophomore Sophia Reich (19:41, 47th).
Reich, who was injured in early September, was in the pool on a constant basis the whole month of October to try and get back to help contribute to the team. She finished within the top 50.
“I can’t say enough what Sophia (Reich) did to get back to help us. She was a difference maker today. All the girls did what they needed to do to win. To be able to accomplish the feat again for the third straight time is a testament to their work ethic and a desire to help win for the team and they did that today,” said North Hunterdon head coach Sean Walsh, who has been at the helm for 15 years. “Gonzalez is a such a well-balanced kid and she has fun. She keeps everyone involved on the team and she is mature for her years. The other girls feed off her leadership as well.”
North Hunterdon won the Group 4 title for the third season in row last Saturday.
